It is very important that files be named with proper conventions, not just for Wiredrive but for the web in general. Poor file and folder names can cause a number of problems, including playback and download issues. To ensure that files and folders always work, we recommend that you follow these best practices:
*All files must have the correct extension (.mov, .mp4, .mp3....) in order to play properly. Files without extensions will cause playback issues.
File names should only contain letters, numbers, underscores, and dashes. You should not use:
- periods
- quotation marks
- slashes
- question marks
- spaces
- Anything that is not a letter, number, or underscore.
Again, Do not use special characters in file and folder names!
Develop well-defined file naming conventions.
The more meaningful and descriptive your file names are, the easier it is to navigate and locate said files. We recommend that you recommend that you develop a standard naming convention that captures information that is important to you. For example, if you are an editorial company and you need to post a new revision of a Doritos spot, then a good filename may be 1_08_Doritos_Rev_2.mov. This file name clearly states the date of the output, the client, and the revision number. These are small details that can make a big difference in workflow.
